It is considered to be the largest river island in the world, covering an area of around 352 square kilometers (136 square miles) during the dry season and around 880 square kilometers (340 square miles) during the monsoon season when the river floods. Majuli Island holds immense cultural and ecological significance. It has been the cultural capital of the Assamese civilization for centuries and is known for its unique blend of art, music, dance, and literature. The island is home to various Vaishnavite monasteries called "Satras" that have preserved and promoted the traditional Assamese culture and practices. The island's landscape is characterized by lush greenery, wetlands, and rice fields. It is also a biodiversity hotspot and is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. Majuli is home to several endangered and rare bird species, including the greater adjutant stork, which is one of the world's rarest storks.
